CCAA’s Demo Artist, Nov. 25: Mark Monsarrat

Mark’s painting concentration is heavily outdoor painting (plein air), but since this is an indoor demo, Mark will be re-creating the plein-air experience from photo reference, showing how he “mixes in chains and paints in layers for marvelous results.”

Mark follows in the classic traditions of the 19th-century romantic landscape painters, inspired by the Hudson River School, Early California painters, and American and California Impressionists. His work is best described as tonal-colorist, Craftsman style. With heavy emphasis on plein-air (outdoor) painting, Mark seeks to capture the many moods of the atmospheric landscape, from picturesque to sublime, always with a warm sense of place.

A professional fine artist in San Francisco for over 30 years, Mark first painted outdoors as a teenager in Columbus, Ohio. After a time in engineering, he moved to California to complete his art education, eventually earning a BFA, an MFA, and taking numerous plein-air workshops.

The Central Coast Art Association meets 6:30-8 pm at the El Estero Park, with a meet & greet time until 6:45 when announcements & the demonstration by the guest artist begins. Meeting/demonstration ends approximately at 8 pm.   777 Pearl St (next to Dennis the Menace Park), Monterey, the fourth Monday of each month (please check for holiday schedules).
