Debbie Segers
Debbie Segers is a self-taught artist whose lifelong passion for arts and crafts has evolved into a practice rooted in tradition and personal storytelling. With no formal training but a deep intuitive connection to visual expression, Debbie began her artistic journey through folk art and landscape painting.
In recent years, Debbie has turned her focus to the historical art of hand-coloring black and white photographs, a technique that dates back to the 1800s, before the advent of color film. What began as a personal endeavor—reviving family photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries—has grown into a meaningful exploration of memory, heritage, and the interplay between photography and painting.
Debbie now hand-colors landscapes and florals that hold personal significance. Each image is carefully tinted using oils, pastels, or colored pencils, breathing new life into grayscale compositions and transforming them into vibrant, emotionally charged works of art.
