In this online session, I’ll take you behind the scenes of my process—how I find ideas, gather reference, and move from small studies to larger studio paintings. I’ll demonstrate how to scale up while maintaining freshness, vitality, and a sense of immediacy. We’ll look at working in layers, along with practical approaches to value structure and color mixing.

The visual lecture will combine oil painting with watercolor studies, showing how each informs the other. I paint in an impressionistic style with a touch of realism, so everything will be geared toward keeping color vibrant and the work alive. I’ll also share how I interpret photo reference and integrate outdoor material—sketches, notes, and plein air studies—into finished pieces. Time permitting, we’ll open it up for questions and I’ll walk through some recent moves on a large painting currently on the easel.
