Darkness Before Dawn Ukraine by Kathy Coulston

Painting quiet moments out loud, my work celebrates the drama of ordinary by connecting to the unexpected using bold color, dramatic perspective, and embellished shadows. Finding resilience in the familiar, I strive to mix an element of surprise, comfort, and whimsy in my work.

A sense of being alone is a common thread in my painting. Despite being surrounded by friends, family, and acquaintances, we are all alone on our journey through life. Trying to relate in our search for connection, we still feel loneliness and isolation due to our unique qualities, which make us feel separate. Combining imagery of being different with the feel of familiar comfort, we celebrate inclusion. Unconventional becomes something to embrace.

From beginnings in a family of undiscovered artists, creativity included a tactile process of making things from nothing. After a technology-driven career in design and marketing communications, the pull of my roots brought me back to the easel with paintbrush in hand.
