Sally Schuman
I am a California native, born in Berkeley, raised in Monterey. We recently lived in Rhode Island for 8 years, during which time I took art classes almost continuously, switching to Zoom during Covid.
We returned to the Monterey Peninsula in 2024, and this past summer I was moved (by the art spirit?) to try something new to me: collages of painted paper in the “abstract expressionist” style.”
What I love about the collage process with paper is that tearing or cutting paper reveals unexpected edges and forms –and in playing around with the pieces on watercolor paper backgrounds I discovered new compositions that I had not foreseen.
The cut and torn paper in my work is all from old paintings I did that had no other future — but with their interesting marks and colors found their place in the collages. I often paint the watercolor background paper as well. This process has been very exciting to me.
Please enjoy looking at my works.
